Review

Silent Words is a different sort of children’s story. The main character, Zelda is a cheerful, talkative little girl. Once day with her parents, the horrific happens: her parents are carried away by the wind in a balloon. Zelda is devastated and loses her ability to speak the hurt and pain she is experiencing. Luckily she has a grandmother to take care of her but she never forgets her parents.

Eventually, Zelda decides to try and find her parents. She travels the world on a huge ball of all the words she can’t seem to say and experiences amazing things during her journey. She never does find her parents but when her grandmother follows her and finds her she realizes she is still loved and not alone. Thee words happily come back.

I enjoyed this story and I loved the creative illustrations. It felt more adult in it’s format but the story is a great one for a child.

4 out of 5 stars.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Zelda loves to talk. She always asks a million questions and her head is full of words like apple, bunny, cartwheel and dwizzledoodle. But when a sudden storm turns Zelda’s world upside down, all her words go silent. Zelda must embark on a quest across mountains, forests and oceans to find her parents—and her voice.

This moving tale about loss and hope will tug at your heartstrings. Author Chantal Fournier’s poetic storytelling style and illustrator Nicolas Lajeunesse’s evocative artwork combine to create a poignant story in which a child discovers comfort in the power of words.
